Cultural Heritage in Times of Climate Change – Perspectives of Preventive Conservation

Ralf Kilian Ralf Kilian is associate professor in Preventive Conservation of Built Cultural Heritage at Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg since December 2020. At the same time he is directing the field of Cultural Heritage Research at the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP, Holzkirchen.
He studied Restoration, Technology of Arts and Conservation Science and Civil Engineering at Technische Universität München. His research deals with many different aspects of monument preservation and energy efficiency, sustainability in retrofitting museums as well as with the indoor climate in historic buildings and climatic impacts on works of art. He also works in the field of conservation risk assessment for different damage phenomena and art materials, e.g. the impact of mould or damaging salts on cultural heritage materials.

Sustainable Places: Cultural Preservation and Ecological Change in Bishop Hill, Illinois
On Monday, August 30th, at 15:15–17:00, the SINAS Research Seminar will be joined by Margaret Farrar (political science, John Carroll University) and Adam Kaul (anthropology, Augustana College), who will present a chapter from their ongoing book on cultural heritage and sustainability in the small, Swedish-American town of Bishop Hill, Illinois.

Alexandra Troi is professor at Hochschule Coburg in Germany and her teaching and research is about energy efficiency and building physics in historic buildings. She is presently vice head of the Eurac Institute for renewable energy, which is a regional research institute located in South Tyrol, Italy. Within the institute, she is the leader of the research group on energy retrofit of historic buildings and this is also where she has her own expertise. She has had a leading role in several large international research projects. Most recently she led the International Energy Agency Task 59 “Renovating Historic Buildings Towards Zero energy”.

Polina Verbytska is a lecturer at the Department of History, Museology and Cultural Heritage at Lviv Polytechnic National University in Ukraine.
The city is an important and interesting object of studying social and cultural changes in Ukraine. The purpose of the lecture, based on the theoretical and methodological provisions of social and environmental psychology, urban semiotics, communication theory and the concept of collective memory, is to analyze how different ideologies and political powers create, change and affect the physical and symbolic image of the city.

Rasmi Shoocongdej: Professor in Archaeology at Silpakorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.
The mortuary practice of burying the dead in log coffins in caves was common in prehistoric times throughout Southeast Asia. Today, most of these ancient burial sites are destroyed by looters and animals. Long Long Rak log coffin cave in Thailand is an archaeological site that has been excavated since 2015 and one of the main challenges is the preservation of the site. The management is not only physical but also includes knowledge management, which is transmitted through local schools and communities, including public media. The project applies a participatory action research method, to make local communities aware of the significance of the archaeological sites, and include a co-ownership process to protect the sites. However, recently a rapid tourism development by the government has affected the site, since the communities and their management of the cave are not yet ready for the mass tourism. This is a phenomenon that is commonly found in many developing countries around the world, which affects the sustainability of heritage sites in the long-term perspective.

SuHRFs symposium gav avsedd effekt!

Vid SuHRFs symposium i vintras var Dr. Kalliopi Fouseki, från UCL London key note speaker. Mötet mellan Dr Fouseki och medarbetarna på kulturvård renderade i en gemensam ansökan till Energimyndighetens forskningsprogram Spara och bevara, vilken nu har blivit beviljad. Under tre år skall projektet Att hantera förändringar i historiska byggnader – en systemdynamisk strategi för att förstå relationen mellan energieffektivisering och kulturvärden genomföras. Projektbudgeten är på 3,7 miljoner kronor.
Syftet med projektet är att utveckla en systemdynamisk modell för att öka förståelsen för vad som påverkar hur beslut om energieffektivisering fattas av användare (dvs boende, fastighetsägare, förvaltare och tjänstemän) av historiska byggnader i Sverige och i vilken grad byggnadernas kulturvärden vägs in i besluten. Mer specifikt syftar projektet till att förstå dynamiken i beslutsprocesserna hos avnämarna och vilka attityder och värderingar som påverkar de beslut som fattas. Det slutgiltiga målet är att genom ökad förståelse kunna ta fram bättre anpassade vägledningar och policies för hur ökad energieffektivisering kan nås med hänsyn till byggnaders kulturvärden.

Reimagining Museums for Climate Action: An International Design Competition
The Arts and Humanities Research Council invites entries for its reimagining museums for climate action competition. This seeks to reimagine the role of museums to help society transform to a low carbon future, adapt to the impacts of climate change, and safeguard ecosystems. This competition asks designers, architects, academics, artists, poets, philosophers, writers, museum professionals, indigenous groups, community groups and the public at large to radically reimagine and redesign the museum as an institution, to help bring about more equitable and sustainable futures in the climate change era. Proposals that address the following priority themes are of particular interest:
•climate justice;
•green futures.
The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18. Submissions can be made by individuals or small teams.

SuHRF har börjat ge resultat!

En forskargrupp vid avdelningen för Kulturvård, Uppsala universitet har fått forskningsstöd för projektet Varsam energieffektivisering av 1900-talets villabebyggelse. Projektet finansieras av Energimyndigheten inom ramen för forskningsprogrammet Spara och bevara. Stödet är på 3,8 miljoner kronor och löper under fyra och ett halvt år. Idén till projektet föddes under ett SuHRF-internat på Fårö på Gotland.
Projektet syftar till att ta fram fördjupad kunskap om hur kulturhistorisk värdefull villabebyggelse kan energieffektiviseras på varsamma sätt, och att sprida denna kunskap bland fastighetsägare, myndigheter och branschen i stort. Kulturhistoriskt värdefull villabebyggelse, byggd mellan 1910 och 1970 kommer att kartläggas med avseende på ursprungliga byggnadskonstruktioner, renoveringsåtgärder som utförts, samt i vilken utsträckning bebyggelsen är skyddad mot förvanskning. Slutligen kommer ett paket med varsamma energieffektiviseringsåtgärder för tio typiska villor att tas fram.

Guest lecture: Retrofit Strategies for Energy Efficiency in Historic Urban Fabric: A Case Study in Basmane District, İzmir-Turkey

Energy efficient retrofit of historic urban stock requires a methodical approach, comprehensive analysis and case-specific solutions. This study presents a pilot study conducted at the neighborhood scale, consisting of 22 pre- and early-republican residential and contemporary buildings in a historic urban fabric of İzmir, Turkey. It aims to develop an integrated approach to identify case-specific energy efficient solutions for retrofit strategy of larger scale historic district. It utilizes building performance simulation (BPS) model, created through the documentation and quick field survey. Two retrofit packages and three individual operational solutions are constituted by considering five-leveled retrofit impact assessment of the CEN EN 16883:2017 Standard.

Is there such a thing as a dead landscape? And if so, who killed it? My lecture will explore how a growing standardization, museumization, and Disneyfication of historical landscapes has led to the loss of embodied, affective experience. Is technology the answer to helping us bring dead landscapes back to life? Or should we look to the landscapes themselves for multisensory engagement possibilities? Using examples from my fieldwork in different ‘Viking’ landscapes, I argue that in connection with a more critical approach to reconstruction and interpretation of the past, it is also crucial to explore the emotional and affective dimensions of historical landscapes to create more dynamic, inclusive, interactive, and performative spaces for visitors with different interests and capacities to be affected.

Ledare för workshopen är Karin Farsäter, doktorand vid Lunds Tekniska Högskola inom området hållbar renovering. Karin undervisar sedan 2015 om LCA.
Workshopen är kostnadsfri och alla intresserade är välkomna.

Beslut om medel för gästforskare och gästdoktorander

SuHRF gästforskarprogram ger etablerade forskare aktiva vid Campus Gotland möjlighet att bjuda in internationella såväl som nationella kollegor att tillbringa en period som gästforskare på Campus Gotland. Syftet är att stimulera akademiska utbyten och kontakter samt att stärka forskningsmiljön på Campus Gotland. Stöd för Gästforskare kan sökas två gånger per år, den 31 mars respektive den 30 september.
Vid höstens ansökningstillfälle beslutade SuHRFs styrgrupp att ge stöd till tre ansökningar om gästforskare och tre ansökningar om gästdoktorander:

Beviljade medel för forskningsstöd

Vi kan med glädje meddela att de första ansökningarna för forskningsstöd har beviljats av SuHRF:s styrgrupp.
Till hösten kommer Campus Gotland besökas av Þórný Barðadóttir från Icelandic Tourism Research Centre och tillsammans med Ulrika Persson-Fischier vid Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper utveckla ett forskningssamarbete. Avdelningen för kulturvårds professor Tor Broström har fått beviljat medel för att bjuda in Andrea Luciani, forskare på Institutionen för samhällsbyggnad och naturresurser vid Luleå tekniska universitet. Tillsammans ska de strategiskt arbeta för att ta fram ansökningar till nationella finansiärer och söka partnerskap för internationella ansökningar inom området energieffektivisering i kulturhistoriskt värdefulla byggnader.

Donnerska husets aula fylldes till bredden under det första ”Samtal om Visby världsarv”, ett samarbete mellan Sustainable Heritage Research Forum och Region Gotlands världsarvskontor. Samtalet handlade denna gång om frågor kring vad som bidrar och hindrar en hållbar och levande stadskärna. Inbjudna till panelen var regionrådet Eva Ahlin, regionantikvarien Jörgen Renström, fastighetsägaren Roy Abd-El Ahad och Linnéa Grimstedt, som är ordförande för Gotlands Kulturrum. Under veckan har både tidningar och radio rapporterat om samtalet på olika sätt.

Genom en studenttävling har Sustainable Heritage Research Forum nu fått en illustration! Vinnande bidrag är skapat av Tom Sörhuus, grafisk formgivare och student på Konstvetenskap A Campus Gotland.
Motivering:
En subtil organisk form i kombination med en distinkt grafisk helhet.
Den enkla formen lämnar utrymme för tolkning av vad hållbar kulturvård kan vara. Den är varken vag eller övertydlig. I den ser vi allt från ett träd i ovanfrånperspektiv, en tankebubbla eller en önskan om något. Texten är både lättläst och förhöjer de två viktigaste orden i namnet. Illustrationen är tack vare sin utformning möjlig att förändra, både gällande färg och lutning, vilket i sig gör den långsiktigt hållbar.
