Syllabus for Complex Nursing

Decisions and guidelines

The course is given in term 6 in the nursing programme and consists of theoretical studies and clinical/practical proficiency training (15 credits) as well as clinical placement (15 credits). The subject matter is 20 credits in Health Science with a specialisation in nursing and 10 credits in Medical Science. The subjects are integrated.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student based on an overall view on man, should be able to:

• plan, distribute and delegate tasks, interact with different professional groups as well as supervise staff and students to achieve good and safe care
• plan and apply situation-adapted measures to prevent disease transmission as well as healthcare-related infections
• distinguish different ill health and disease, explain pathophysiology as well as evaluate choice of diagnostics and treatment
• independently and in collaboration with the patient and related identify care needs, establish nursing plan as well as give and evaluate care and treatment
• apply drug management and evaluate modes of action and side effects, including be able to inform the patient about the effects of the drugs and side effects
• apply and evaluate situation-adapted information and communication technique
• apply and evaluate current evidence-based knowledge including steering documents, theories, models and concepts as well as methods in relation to nursing, organisation, leadership, development and learning

On completion of the course, the student should:

• show a professional attitude vis-à-vis patients and their family
• show self-knowledge and empathetic ability
• evaluate his need of additional knowledge and show strategies for continuous development of his skills

Content

HEALTH SCIENCES WITH A SPECIALISATION IN NURSING (20 CREDITS)

- equal care including health care ethics and society aspects

- violence in close relation with a focus on women and vulnerable groups

- theories, models and concepts related to health sciences with a specialisation in nursing

- health economics concepts

- leadership models including conflict management

- the organisation of Swedish health care, laws, ordinances and steering documents

- teaching and supervision of patient, staff and students

- professional supervision in nursing

- evidence-based care, including quality and safety aspects in the care

- improvement knowledge in dialogue with clinical activities

- basic and specific nursing at ill helath and risk for ill health

- the nursing process, documentation and care planning models

- cooperation in team with a focus on complex care and professional skills

- information and communication technique

MEDICAL SCIENCE (10 credits)

- pathophysiology, diagnostics and treatment during ill health and disease in somatic care of adult and psychiatric care of children and adults

- pharmacology

- microbiology and immunology

- nutrition

- pain

- examinations in clinical chemistry/physiology and radiology

Instruction

WORKING METHODS

Lectures, literature studies, work in tutorial groups, role plays, individual work, seminars and web-based teaching.

Clinical proficiency training as well as clinical placement including interprofessional learning in a clinical education ward.

COMPULSORY PARTS

Introduction to course, compulsory lectures, timetabled tutorial group meetings, seminars, clinical proficiency training, clinical placement, study assignments with written and/or oral presentation and examination.

Assessment

Examination is continuous throughout the course in the form of written and oral assignments individually and in groups as well as examination of clinical/practical skills. The assignments are examined during the course and are based on the guidelines (date and time), that are stated by the course director/examiner. For examination of clinical placement, the assessment instrument AssCe is used as support. All parts of the course and the written individual final examination must be approved in order for the entire course to be regarded as passed.

NATIONAL CLINICAL FINAL EXAMINATION (NCFE)

In the frame of the course, NCFE, a written examination and a practical test takes place, regarding the content of the whole nursing programme.

For participation in National clinical final examination, written part, are required:

- passed courses from term 1-4 as well as 15 credits from term 5, including passed clinical placement with associated theoretical assignments (in total 135 credits).

For participation in National clinical final examination (NCFE), practical part, are required:

- passed courses from term 1-4, passed clinical placement with associated theoretical assignments in T5 as well as additional 15 credits in all from term 5 and 6 (in total 142,5 credits)

Other directives

A student who fails an examination is entitled to 4 re-examinations.(= in total 5 examinations). After 5 failed examinations, the student may lose his or her guaranteed place in the programme. If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may allow further additional examinations.

Each occasion the student participates in an examination is regarded as one examination attempt. Submission of a so called blank exam is regarded as one examination.

According to the decision by the Faculty of Medicine (Dnr 3579/98, 3651/98I) the student should hand in a written application to the course director/director of studies to be allowed to participate in examination a fourth time. Course leader/director of studies should than analyse the situation together with the student and when necessary offer support actions in order to optimise the student's preparations before examination.

Student who has not passed during clinical placement has the right to undergo renewed placement once (Dnr 3579/98, 3651/98I).

The date is decided in each individual case, based on when teacher and supervisor within clinical activities are available mainly within the term. Clinical placement is given in collaboration with clinical activities, leave can not be granted at this time. Clinical placement can be located also on evenings/weekends and commuting occur.
